Worsening Droughts and Hunger in Madagascar

Worsening Droughts and Hunger in Madagascar

According to the World Food Programme, “Southern Madagascar is experiencing its worst
drought in four decades with more than 1.14 million people food insecure”. Madagascar is on
the brink of the world’s first food crisis caused by climate change. This is demonstration of
how lack of attention to climate change can have a negative effect on people and their lives.
The reason for this food crisis is a drought that has been ongoing for four years resulted in
food production being halted.

The conditions in which the Madagascan residents find themselves in is dire. They are even
need to scavenge for food such as edible roots and insects. The climate induced drought and
famine is the worst one that has hit Madagascar since 1981, yet if the world continues to
ignore climate change then it can be expected that similar situations will occur in other countries.
