Rwandan Government urged to reform law favoring people with disabilities

The National Union of Disabilities Organizations of Rwanda (NUDOR), called on the Rwandan Government to revise the laws that protect people with disabilities in the country, stating that it is outdated and is not inclusive enough. The current laws regarding people with disabilities leave out some other forms of disabilities, therefore depriving persons of opportunities to be able to live a normal life and to integrate to society. NUDOR submitted a position paper to the Government, which seeks to push for social benefits distributions and further inclusion of all persons with disabilities in the law. Currently, the law tends to only recognize ‘physical disabilities’ and groups other traditionally known disabilities such as the mental ones into a category called ‘others’. NUDOR, however, commended the Rwandan Government for putting a new national policy in place for people with disabilities, however NUDOR believes that it is not yet inclusive enough, although it is a huge step towards inclusivity.
