Italy: Climate activists sue the government over inaction

Environmental activists are suing the Italian government for their lack of action regarding the global climate crisis. This is the first legal initiative of this sort in Italy. Two hundred three plaintiffs will be involved in the case taking place in Rome’s civil court. The plaintiffs ask for stricter measures and more ambitious policies to tackle the crisis’s most severe effects. In addition, they demand a drastic decrease in Italy’s carbon emissions. In 2019, Italy announced its target for carbon emissions: a reduction of 33% by 2030. However, according to the plaintiffs, the government failed to develop an action plan despite the severe weather events occurring in the country.
