The UN human rights office (OHCHR) has expressed deep concern over reports of excessive use of force by the police in Kenya to suppress protests, resulting in dozens of deaths and injuries. The demonstrations initially arose from discontent among Kenyans regarding perceived unfair tax increases and rising inflation. OHCHR spokesperson Jeremy Laurance condemned the violence and raised alarm about allegations of unnecessary and disproportionate use of force, including the use of firearms, by the police. Reports indicate that up to 23 people have been killed, with many more injured during the protests. Kenya's opposition leader has called for civil disobedience and nationwide protests against the government, citing concerns over the high cost of living and growing inequality. The OHCHR has called for prompt, thorough, and transparent investigations into the incidents, urging authorities to ensure the right to peaceful assembly and engage in open dialogue to address the underlying social, economic, and political grievances.
