EU sanctions eleven individuals and four entities responsible for serious human rights violations under EU Global Human Rights Sanctions Regime

Council of the European Union imposed restrictive measures on several international actors and entities guilty of human rights violations. Previously the council sanctioned 4 Russian individuals for the same violations, making the total number of designations 19. The violations targeted by these sanctions include repressions of Uyghurs in Xinjiang in China, repressions of people in the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, extrajudicial killings and enforced disappearances in Libya, torture and repression against LGBTI persons and political opponents in Chechnya in Russia, and torture, extrajudicial, summary or arbitrary executions and killings in South Sudan and Eritrea. The subjects of the sanctions will have their assets frozen in the EU, and individuals will be subjected to a travel ban to the EU. In addition, persons and entities in the EU are prohibited from making funds available, either directly or indirectly, to the listed perpetrators.
