On 31 July 2021, the Special Rapporteur on the rights of women of the African Commission on Human and people’s rights enjoyed the Pan African women’s day to highlight the importance of remembering the key role of African women in fostering political emancipation and socio-economic development of the continent. The African Commission chose the “African Women in Arts, Culture and Heritage” to be the theme of 2021’s celebration to stress the essential participation of women in transforming the subjects of arts, culture and heritage into a significant force to strengthen regional integration, inclusive and sustainable economic growth and development and provide employment opportunities for many including women and youths. Nevertheless, the Special Rapporteur also flagged the numerous challenges and threats against the rights of women in the continent. Despite the advancements, African women continue to suffer from gender inequality, discrimination, gender-based violence and a deep lack of political representation. In rural areas, the female population remain enduring unemployment and barriers to access resources, which negatively affect their productivity and economic empowerment.
