Zambian Government denies allegations of human rights abuses ahead of August 12 elections

Zambia’s Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting Services, Amos Malupenda, reacted against Amnesty International’s allegations of human rights abuses in the country. Amnesty International, last Monday, accused the Zambian government of ‘killings and brutal crackdowns’ against members of the opposition, which allegedly results in fear of voting. According to Secretary Malupenda, Amnesty International’s accusations are biased and is intentionally causing panic. According to Malupenda, a ‘vibrant’ civil society is existing in Zambia, with a thriving independent media, who are free to criticize the Zambian Government without repercussions. However, according to Amnesty International’s latest report, brutal crackdown on human rights and attacks on any dissent against the Government is rising continuously, especially ahead of the August 12 elections.
