Namibian workers union stands against labor violence at Chinese construction companies

On July 31, 2021, the Metal and Allied Namibian Workers Union (MANWU), an organization formed by Namibian workers to improve labor conditions in construction firms across the country, urged its members to mobilize themselves against violence and abuse at Chinese construction and engineering companies.

The General Secretary of the MANWU, Justine Jonas, addressed the union following a request by Lieutenant-General Sebastian Ndeitunga, the head of the Namibian Police Force (NPF), to tighten security around Chinese nationals and their businesses in Namibia due to a threat of terror attack. The MANWU expressed its belief that the Namibian government stood behind the command for the special protection of Chinese nationals.

General Secretary Jonas criticized Lieutenant General Ndeitunga’s decision and emphasized that the NPF must protect all citizens, including the local workers, of which many fell victim to violence and abuse at Chinese work sites. A dire need to address such abusive treatment of Namibian workers is hindered by little to no dialogue between the MANWU and the Chinese embassy in Windhoek, Namibia’s capital.

General Secretary Jonas added that on August 1, 2021, the MANWU would write an official letter to Lieutenant General Ndeitunga, delineating the union’s stance on the situation.
