The United Arab Emirates as a model for women's rights in the Middle East: Projection or Reality?

Summary: It seems that the United Arab Emirates take on a leading role in terms of opportunities for women and gender equality in the Arab World. However, the reality for most women paints a different picture.

Though successful women have been all over the media in the United Arab Emirates and the the World Economic Forum's annual Global Gender Gap Report has listed the UAE as a "leader in promoting gender equality in the Middle East", critics are left to wonder how these acclaims can be reconciled with accusations of severe (women's) human rights abuses. For example, issues of parental guardianship, marriage, and divorce remain pressing and are testimony to women's lack of rights vis à vis male citizens.
