Emma was beaten up by her husband Sylvester Hashiti on April 9th 2021. According to sources, Emma had stumbled upon his conversation on a social media platform with another woman and as she confronted him, he beat her using his fists, he pulled her hair and choked her. Emma then fled the house and reported the crime to Borrowdale Police Station.

The morning after, Hashiti turned up at the police station together with the opposition leader, Chamisa as they tried to drop the domestic violence investigation. According to the Herald newspaper, Chamisa had said that "the case involved top people and therefore it was unnecessary to report it". The police said they are continuing with the investigation; however, Emma is refusing to follow up on her initial report, she was asked to bring a medical report, but she never appeared. Perhaps because she is afraid.
