Women's protest repressed in Chicoloapan

Municipal police of Chicoloapan attacked feminists with blows and sexually assaulting feminists who were demonstrating in front of the mayor's office to demand attention to their cases of gender violence; eight women and one man were referred to the Public Ministry and released overnight. Women were arbitrarily detained for several hours and there was no information about their legal situation, their physical condition or the treatment they received. The events occurred on Tuesday 11th of May, when a group of 15 women attended the call for a peaceful protest against political parties, “for all women in the periphery, for their safety. Because their results until today have been of no use”, according to the invitation.

The women reported that they were physically assaulted and accused of crimes that they did not commit against the citizenry while exercising their right of freedom of assembly. They also called on citizens, authorities, human rights agencies, humanitarian brigades, feminist collectives, women's rights defenders and feminist lawyers to stand in solidarity for the safety of the women who demonstrated, and warned: “We will not take a step back in the fight until the authorities commit themselves and make effective changes against femicides and gender violence in the municipality, we will not stop demanding justice until all women in Chicoloapan can live a life free of violence".
