The United States has reaffirmed its commitment to assisting Pakistan in both its efforts to combat terrorism and its ongoing economic reforms. During a press briefing on Tuesday, State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller acknowledged Pakistan’s advancements in stabilising its economy and managing its substantial debt, while expressing robust support for the country’s endeavours. Mr. Miller stated:

We welcome last month’s announcement that the IMF has reached a staff-level agreement with Pakistan. We understand that the Pakistani Minister of Finance is in Washington for meetings at the IMF and World Bank. Pakistan has made progress in stabilising its economy, and we support its efforts to manage its daunting debt burden.

On a separate matter, Miller reiterated the United States’ support for Pakistan’s counter-terrorism efforts, stating, “We continue to stand with Pakistan in its fight against terrorism and violent extremism.” He also highlighted the importance of peaceful protests worldwide, including in Pakistan, in response to a question regarding the fatalities during a PTI protest in Islamabad. The November 24th PTI protest escalated into violent clashes, resulting in the deaths of at least three Rangers personnel and two policemen. The party claimed that 20 of its members were killed during the security forces’ crackdown, which led to the arrest of more than 1,000 PTI supporters, including over 30 Afghan nationals.

Furthermore, Miller confirmed that US officials consistently raise concerns over the alleged conspiracy to assassinate a Sikh leader in discussions with Indian officials. He declined to comment further on the attack, noting that the US Department of Justice is actively investigating the matter. Additionally, when asked about former President Trump’s remarks regarding threats to allied nations, Miller refrained from commenting, stating, “I don’t think it’s appropriate for me to comment on the policies of an administration that has not yet taken office.”
