Various stakeholders call for changes in some Liberian laws and practices regarding the protection of the rights of all citizens and residents of Liberia

Under the guidance of the United Nations Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) and the Law Reform Commission in Liberia, stakeholders and representatives of civil societies produced a policy document calling for changes in some Liberian laws and practices. The policy document on the protection of human rights of the Liberian people was produced under the European Union/United Nations spotlight initiative to thoroughly review Liberian laws to identify cultural practices that violate fundamental human rights and to formulate a strategy to address the human rights gaps. The chairman of the Liberian Law Reform Commission, Atty. Ramses T. Kumbuyah, stated that adherence to the rule of law is necessary for peace, stability and economic development. Liberia has previously committed to take some positive steps towards the elimination of Female Genital Mutilation and to protect the rights of the LGBTQI+ community.
