United Nations (UN) High Commissioner urges Palestinian authorities to ensure the safety of protestors ahead of planned demonstrations in Ramallah

The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Michelle Bachelet, said she was deeply concerned about the security of the protesters in Palestine and urged the government to ensure their safety and their freedom of expression and thought, differently from what happened in the demonstrations of the past days. In particular, new protests are expected in Ramallah.  Last week a man lost his life during the demonstrations following a violent operation of the Palestinian security forces. The concerns of the United Nations arise from the presence of people in civilian clothes that actively collaborate with the Palestinian security forces, and it is also linked to a strong discriminatory attitude by the police against women who take part in the protests.
