UN says 16 million Yemenis ‘marching towards starvation’

The head of the UN food agency warned that 16 million people in Yemen are marching towards starvations. Currently, the World Food Programme is running out of money. Unless new funding arrives, food rations for millions will be cut. By October, reductions will be made for 3.2 million people, and then for 5 million by December. 

On March the 1st, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres appealed for $3.85bn for Yemen, however, the donors pledged $1.7bn. UN General Assembly’s annual meeting raised about $600m, however it is still short a $1bn.  Furthermore, the US Secretary of State Antony Blinken announced an additional $290m in humanitarian assistance for Yemen and additionally, the European Union announced €119m (around  $139m) in humanitarian and development aid.

The World Food Programme’s David Beasley, has urged the war to stop to end the suffering of the Yemini people. He stated that their currency, the riyal is devaluing, and the food prices are rising.
