Ukraine’s war camps

Ukraine’s war camps

Russia has interfered in Ukraine's internal affairs starting with the 2013-14 Euromaidan protests. The protests represented a wave of civil unrest. They targeted Viktor Yanukovych's decision, the President of Ukraine at that time, which meant to suspend the finalisation of a potential agreement with the European Union. The 2014 Ukrainian Revolution followed several violent protests taking place within the country. In the Russophone regions of Ukraine, people were protesting, leading to a political crisis that included the territory of Crimea.

Separatists, supported mainly by Russian “volunteers”, military and intelligence officers, restored Josef Stalin’s 1937 constitution and established the Russian Orthodox Church as the sole religious authority. Ihor Kozlovsky, a university professor, took part in the demonstrations. At the beginning of 2016, Kozlovsky was detained and barely survived Europe’s last “concentration camps”. The Ukrainian officials are aware of these camps, and they have been used with President Vladimir Putin's silent approval. The prisoners have no access to lawyers, no contact with their families and cannot reach any information from the outside world. The camps are the spot of dreadful human rights violations where torture and even death can occur. Check out Aljazeera's article to read the full story of Ihor Kozlovsky.
