Uganda - US says elections in January lacked transparency

In January Uganda held general elections, whereby incumbent Yoweri Museveni was elected, gathering 68% of the vote to secure sixty-five years in office.

In a media statement released on Friday, April 16, 2021, the United States Secretary of State, Anthony Blinken, stated that the actions by Museveni’s regime during the electoral process destabilized democracy and respect for human rights. The US had already raised concerns regarding the electoral process upon calling off its observation, claiming there was a lack of transparency and accountability.

During the statement by Anthony Blinken, the US also announced visa restrictions against persons believed to have influenced the outcome of the electoral process in Uganda. Furthermore, Blinken stated that the security forces in Uganda should be held accountable for the deaths and injuries of innocent people, unarmed journalists and supporters of the opposition that occurred before, during and after the electoral process.
