Today, countries around the world celebrate International Women’s Day. This holiday is celebrated in order to honour the achievements of women around the world as well as shine light upon the plight suffered by women. This momentous day has been observed by countries around the world for more than hundred years and the United Nations for 47 years. This year’s International Women’s Day is celebrated with the UN official theme “Gender Equality for today for a sustainable tomorrow” and the campaign theme “Break the Bias”.
In order to mark the occasion, the United Nations has prepared a virtual event that is expected to last from 10 – 11:30 AM EST. The event is attended by the UN Secretary General António Guterres, the President of the General Assembly Tijjani Muhammad-Bane, the Chair of the Commission on the Status of Women Mathu Joyini, the Executive Director of UN Women Sima Bahous as well as various activists. The event is also open to the attendance of any interested person virtually upon registration.
In addition, various virtual and in person local events have been prepared in countries around the world to celebrate International Women’s Day.
