On February 12th, 2025 the United Nations Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) published a fact-finding report regarding the human rights violations and abuses relating to the protests of July and August in Bangladesh. It is revealed in the independent investigation that the former government might be held accountable for the crime of crime against humanity, as a widespread, systematic attack was conducted against the students and protesters during the protest. Notably, up to 1400 people were killed over a period of 45 days as a consequence (Al Jazeera, 2025).
The Interim Government of Bangladesh proposed the initial invitation to conduct an independent investigation. Moreover, upon the publication of the report, Prof. Dr. Muhammad Yunus, the Chief Advisor of the Interim Government of Bangladesh, welcomed the report. Yunus stated that he wishes to transform Bangladesh into a country where all of the people of the country can live in security and dignity upon the publication of the report (The Daily Star, 2025).
