THE TRAINING OF HEALTH WORKERS IN SOMALILAND: THE FUTURE IS NOW

The COVID-19 pandemic showed the world the importance of a healthcare system that guarantees the Right to Health, the care and assistance to everyone, and this is an idea towards which the Somaliland government strives. Unfortunately, the pandemic also provided evidence on how difficult it is to improve and to offer the correct training to the health workers, which is necessary to improve not just the healthcare system in the present, but also in the future.

The Somaliland Sun made a great summary about the trajectory of Somaliland society in this field in the last 12 months. Some of these successes were the strengthening of the quality of undergraduate education for health professionals and the establishment of programmes of specialization and professional development in health teaching. These two examples are important in order to understand the educational system needed to improve the quality of health in Somaliland and can be also seen as directions for other countries to follow.

Furthermore, the implementation of online courses to all of the health professionals and the improvement of the Master’s Degree courses on health are considered important ways to move forward to change Somaliland's reality.
