The general elections in Pakistan have officially started. However, voters were shocked to discover the suspension of cellular and internet services [1]. The suspension of services targeted major cities, including Islamabad, Karachi, Rawalpindi, Lahore, and Peshawar [1]. The Pakistani government defends the suspension of services because it would ensure voters' safety and ensure law and order maintenance [1]. The Pakistani government argued the increase in terrorist attacks in the country warranted the suspension of mobile and internet services.

However, suspending mobile and internet services damages the election process, rather than fully safeguarding it. Pakistani voters experienced the suspension as a hurdle to the election process, indicating they were left unable to book taxis or coordinate trips to the polling stations with family or friends [2]. Additionally, voters were unable to find information about their polling stations and how to access them [3]. Voters aren’t the only ones outraged by the suspension of services. The Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) has requested the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) to immediately restore the suspended services. Unfortunately, this request was not fulfilled [3].

The Commonwealth Observers’ Group (COG) is monitoring the elections within Pakistan [1]. The COG does not find the suspension of services troublesome. Rather, the head of the organization, Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan indicated voting is more important than internet access [1]. However, the organization may be underestimating the significant role the internet plays in accessing polling stations [1]. The ECP is not willing to return the mobile and internet services, therefore, the election process will have to continue without these services.
