On August 22nd, the international annually celebrates the International Day Commemorating the Victims of Acts of Violence Based on Religion or Belief. The day was first observed following the adoption of Resolution A/RES/73/296 by the General Assembly on June 3rd, 2019.

Acts of violence, hate and intolerance against individuals based on religion or belief, especially against those belonging to religious communities and religious minorities is increasing and intensifying worryingly. Such acts often amount to serious crimes of international character, despite the international framework protecting them. Indeed, Articles 18, 19 and 20 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights refer to freedom of religion or belief, freedom of opinion and expression, the right to peaceful assembly and the right to freedom of association which are “interdependent, interrelated and mutually reinforcing”. (United Nations, n.d)

Protecting these rights is fundamental to build up a society founded on tolerance and respect, to build back better after the COVID-19 pandemic and to achieve the SDGs. In the 21st century, religion increasingly becomes the justification for misogyny, homophobia, and racism with daily discriminations being deep rooted in religious stigmatisation. That is why, the adoption of the International Day by the United Nations calls on States and the whole international society to condemn these acts and implement suitable measures to prevent and fight the phenomenon.
