The Inter-American Commission of Human Rights urges Mexico to prevent and punish acts of violence during the electoral process.

The Inter-American Commission of Human Rights has been flagging numerous demonstrations of violence in Mexico against political agents and civilians who are running for political positions that are going to take place in June 2021. According to the National Electoral Institute (INE in Spanish) the next elections will fulfill more than 19.000 positions at the Mexican State’s structure, including positions that go from the Federal until the municipal framework. The acts of violence have been targeting mainly members of certain political affiliations. Between 4th March 2021 and 21 May 2021, the Candidates’ protection mechanism registered 398 denounces of threats and aggression as well as 13 murders. However, later the same organ became aware that since September 2020, over 88 political actors had been murdered due to the widespread violence in the country.
