The effects of COVID-19 worsened by drought, resulting in 1.4 million Kenyans facing hunger

The counties of Madera, Garissa, Wajir, Isiolo and Turkana are particularly effected by the situation. The government introduced measures such as distribution of food, cash transfer programs, and drought-resistant crops and fertilisers to farmers. Currently, there are over 1.4 million of Kenyans suffering from hunger. The effects of the COVID-19 pandemic are likely to increase these number. The drought effects the abilities of Kenyans to grow food and hence a large number of families suffer from lack of food subsidies. The government of Kenya has asked for assistance from their development partners such as UNICEF, World Bank etc.
