The African Commission on Human and People’s rights celebrates the International day in support of victims of torture.

In support to the International day of victims of torture, the African Commission and its Committee for the Prevention of Torture in Africa (CPTA) join the international community on 26th June to observe the importance of this celebration. Both stressed the common efforts of each one of the African States to tackle the escalating number of torture crimes in the region, and urged the governments to strengthen national measures in order to meet their international obligations regarding the prohibition of torture. Coincidently, today 51 States are parties to the UN Convention against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment (UNCAT). The event also served to celebrate the anniversary of UNCAT’S entry into of force, the main international legal instrument which guides and shapes domestic legislations and the work of international and sub-regional organisations in the prohibition of torture and in combating its devastating impact on victims.
