The African Commission on Human and People’s rights announces the launch of a Commission of Inquiry in Ethiopia.

In accordance with article 45 of the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights, The African Commission on Human and People’s rights announced on 15th June 2021 that it will launch a new Commission of Inquiry to investigate allegations of gross violations of norms of International Human Rights Law and International Humanitarian Law in the on the region of Tigray, in the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia. The Commission was established under the terms of resolution 482 (EXT.OS/XXXII) 2021 and has already begun its mandate in Banjul, Republic of The Gambia. It will conduct investigations on the ground and in neighbouring countries when the conditions are met. The Commission will last initially for a period of 3 months, and it may be renewed after that. It will adhere to the principles of independence, confidentiality, impartiality and neutrality, ensuring the protection of those with whom it collaborates.
