A bombing at a district office in Thailand’s Deep South on March 10th, 2025, has heightened concerns over the ongoing insurgency in the region. While the attack resulted in significant structural damage, no casualties were reported, underscoring the persistent security challenges in the conflict-affected provinces.
In a recent deadly attack in Thailand’s deep south, separatist insurgents targeted a government office in Su Ngai Kolok, Narathiwat province. On March 9th, 2025, around 7:10 p.m., ten heavily armed insurgents stormed the district office while defence volunteers, breaking their Ramadan fast, were on duty. The attackers used assault rifles, grenades, and a car bomb, killing two defence volunteers and injuring eight others. Three civilians nearby were also wounded.
Human Rights Watch condemned the assault as a potential war crime under international humanitarian law, emphasising that the targeting of civilians and civilian structures is prohibited. Following the district office attack, additional bombs exploded in nearby locations, though no casualties were reported.
The Barisan Revolusi Nasional (BRN) insurgents have long targeted ethnic Malay Muslims working with Thai authorities, accusing them of being traitors. These insurgents claim that attacks on civilian officials, such as teachers, are justified by their interpretation of Islam. Human Rights Watch continues to denounce these attacks, asserting that they violate international laws governing armed conflict.
Despite ongoing human rights violations by both insurgents and Thai security forces, the situation in southern Thailand remains dire, with a persistent cycle of violence. Human Rights Watch calls on both parties to halt abuses and ensure accountability for violations committed by either side.
