On Wednesday May 26 the Prosecutor General’s office branded three German non-governmental organisations as “undesirable,” and claimed that the organisations’ activities “threaten the foundations of the constitutional order and security of the Russian Federation.” More than thirty foreign groups including NGO’s, think tanks and other civil society groups have been designated as “undesirable”. German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas reacted: “Representatives of civil society must be allowed to do their work without being criminalised.”
