In February 2021, the Federal Court of Malaysia ruled in a historic step to get rid of a law banning sex between same-sex couples. Despite this success for the LGBTQ+ community in Malaysia, the Malaysian government has not the intention to improve the situation of them practically. Arguing that same-sex relationships are against the Islamic culture of the country, the religious affairs minister Zulkifli Mohamad Al-Bakri set up a new amendment to increase the sentencing limits of Act 355, which is imposing prison sentences up to three years against LGBTQ+ people. The amendment has to go first through the Cabinet, before it can be passed by Parliament. It would worsen the situation of LGBTQ+ people in Malaysia even more.
