A child-rape video posted on TikTok, watched by 32,000 people, sparks waves of indignation and outrage while questioning the responsibility of digital platforms in perpetuating misogyny and violence against women online.
Three young men, aged between 17 and 19, raped a 16-year-old girl in Lisbon, Portugal, having shared the content online on their social networks. The video was seen by 32,000 people without being denounced, and after being removed, many have asked for it to be shared on other social networks, such as Telegram.
They were arrested on suspicion of 51 offences involving aggravated rape, kidnapping, and child pornography offences against a 16-year-old teenager, however were released after questioning, subject only to periodic appearances and a ban on contact with the survivor. The case has sparked outrage and indignation, and many women’s rights organisations and activists have demanded concrete actions. This case raises questions about the responsibility of digital platforms in perpetuating misogyny and violence against women online.
