Pupils from Kibera slums performed fantastic results on Nigeria national exams

The community-based organisation Shining Hope for Communities (Shofco) founded an educational institution by the name of Shofco Kibera school. Last week, two girls attending this school achieved remarkable results making them ranked 7th and 8th of Nairobi county and 52nd and 53rd nationally. A desire to help their families out of poverty fueled their drive to perform this well.

Shofco Kiberia School is teaching poor children from Kibera slums and in 2020, they started to deliver impressive results on the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) exams. Only giant schools in Nigeria, such as Consolata School, Aga Khan Academy, Makini School and Arya Vedic School normally deliver similar high-ranking results. Nevertheless, Shofco topped all these schools.

Hecky Odera, Schofco’s Educational Director,  stated that the results are achieved due to their learning strategies. For example, by means of community-based learning, Schofco chooses a group of students to be called in for a few hours during the COVID-19 lockdown and questions were sent home to the pupils. However, they were all longing for when the pupils were being able to return to school. By this time, the teachers provided the pupils 2 tests a week to follow their educational progressions.
