Polish appeals court overturns ruling against Holocaust historians

A decision by the Polish appeals court overturned a previous ruling against the writers of a book alleging the complicity of Polish Catholics in war crimes related to the Holocaust and the murder of Polish Jews. The niece of one of the men accused in the book of collaborating with German soldiers filed a lawsuit against the writers of the book, claiming that her uncle had, in fact, helped the Jews, and was granted a decision in her favour, forcing the writers to apologise publicly for the content of the book. The Court of Appeal later overturned the decision, pointing out that a court of law is not the right place to carry out historical investigations or to verify researching methods and source materials. The decision was greeted with great joy by the writers in a Polish context where the tendency is to discourage research into collaborationists incidents during the Nazi occupation.
