A man named Utpal Roy (62) was murdered in Narayanganj on February 10th, 2015, triggering widespread concern and confusion regarding the victim’s affiliation with the international non-governmental organisation (NGO) Save the Children Bangladesh. Originally, several local media sources claimed that a man believed to be working as a project director or official for Save the Children Bangladesh was discovered dead in what appeared to be an armed robbery.
Narratives from local news reports suggest the person’s neck had been slit and personal items seemed to be stolen, which would have some people thinking the crime might have been financially driven. Local residents initially claimed that the deceased had been serving in a senior capacity for Save the Children. The information spread rapidly on social media and several news sources, sparking rumours on the type of crime and if it was connected to the claimed professional position of the victim.
Other sources have given more specific information about this case. Authorities revealed that the victim’s body was found inside a residential flat with visible marks of struggle. Witnesses noted that his throat had been brutally slit and observed that several personal belongings were missing from the scene. Some neighbours reported hearing unusual sounds in the early hours of the morning, and there were unknown accounts of a suspicious individual seen leaving the area shortly after the incident. These details led investigators to look into whether the attack was a robbery gone wrong or an intentional act possibly linked to the victim’s previous involvement in community projects.
In response, Save the Children in Bangladesh issued a formal statement on their official social media page clarifying that the deceased person was not employed by them. The organisation also expressed compassion for the victim’s family and indicated their willingness to cooperate with any enquiries if needed.
Local officials have asked anyone with relevant information to come forward, emphasising that public cooperation is critical to resolving the case. Meanwhile, the community has been requested to remain calm and refrain from circulating unverified details about the incident. While police enforcement is investigating all possible motives, including a financially motivated attack connected to his past affiliations, forensic teams are actively examining evidence from the scene.
As the investigation continues, questions remain regarding the circumstances of the murder and the rumours about the victim’s employment. Law enforcement agencies continue to investigate the unfortunate tragedy in the aim of giving answers and justice to the affected family.
