Myanmar military leaders attempting to legitimize power: UN Special Envoy

0

The United Nations special envoy for Myanmar, Christine Schraner Burgener, has expressed her grave concern about the situation in the country due to both the covid and the attempts to legitimise the power assumed after the 1st February coup by general Min Aung Hlaing. The commander-in-chief annulled the results of last year’s elections and had the party leader and the president-elect arrested during the coup, and on 1st August declared himself prime minister of the country. Ms Schraner Burgener pointed out that it is member states duty to recognise new governments and not of the United Nations. Moreover, she could not fail to note that there are numerous violations of human rights, ranging from attacks on the freedom of the press to arbitrary imprisonment and violent repression of pro-democracy demonstrations. The country is also strongly affected by Covid, and the United Nations is trying to implement the process of vaccinating the population. Through dialogue, the aim is to find a peaceful solution to the political crisis in Myanmar by bringing all parties together and trying to put an end to this conflict, which has already claimed a large number of victims and risks escalating into civil war.
