There were eight people killed in “intelligence-based operations” executed by the Pakistani military, in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (Hussain, 2024). The Pakistani military claimed that the individuals who were killed were involved in separatist groups and violent activities (The Dawn, 2024). There were also a few military personnel killed during this operation (The Dawn, 2024). The military operation was approved by the Pakistani government (Hussain, 2024). The aim of these operations was to take action against the separatist groups. There is an increase in the death rates of Pakistanis dying due to violent incidents and attacks around Pakistan; some provinces have had more attacks than others such as Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (Hussain, 2024). One of the main groups involved in these attacks is the Balochistan Liberation Army (Hussain, 2024).
There have been more attacks this year than in 2023, and these attacks have also caused countless deaths including civilians and security forces personnel, which is part of the reason for carrying out this intelligence-based operation (Hussain, 2024). Large military operations are expensive and there is also the impact it can have on politics in the country (Hussain, 2024). The cost also makes it more difficult for the military to conduct larger operations often, to achieve their goal of eliminating the violent attacks, and eventually the separatist groups. It is for this reason that the security forces in Pakistan are moving towards more intelligence based operations as it is less costly, and the large military operations have not proven to be as effective as the government would like, also harming Pakistani citizens (Hussian, 2024).
