Meeting of the President of the International Criminal Court with the Secretary-General of the United Nations in New York

On 6 April 2022, Judge Piotr Hofmański, as President of the International Criminal Court, concluded a three-day official mission to the United Nations headquarters in New York. As part of the mission, he met with UN Secretary-General António Guterres, other UN officials, representatives of states, civil society, and non-governmental organisations based in New York.
The press release of 7 April indicates that “in his meetings, President Hofmański highlighted the Court's unprecedented level of judicial activity and called for the widest possible support of the international community for the Court's independent mandate and its activities taking place on several different continents.” President Hofmański reiterated the Court's gratitude for the continued support and cooperation of the United Nations in its activities. Following this, Secretary-General Guterres renewed assurances of his and the United Nations' firm commitment to supporting the Court in its efforts to address the gravest crimes under international law. The issue of accession to the Rome Statute by States still not parties to the Court was highlighted.
Finally, in the context of the collaborative relationship between the ICC and the United Nations, President Hofmański also met with Achim Steiner, Administrator of the United Nations Development Programme, and Ms. Alice Wairimu Nderitu, Special Adviser to the Secretary-General on the Prevention of Genocide. He additionally had discussions with the New York-based Working Group of the Assembly of States Parties to the Rome Statute.
