Manawan Atikamekw Council turns to United Nations

The Manawan Atikamekw Council has filed a seven-page complaint on the investigation of systematic racism in governmental organizations within Canada to the UN’s special rapporteur on the rights of indigenous peoples. This complaint is being filed as a result of the death of Joyce Echaquan who has passed away six-months ago and had to suffered racial-slurs before she died as a result of COVID-19.

This complaint is a result of what the Manawan Atikamekw Council believes to be a flawed system where indigenous women and girls are often not granted the same rights as men and non-indigenous women. As a result, the Council claims that these women still face discrimination, hatred and violence in their everyday life.
