Justice for Unlawful Detention and Arrest of a South African in Equatorial Guinea

0

The Western Cape High Court commanded the Vice President of Equatorial Guinea to compensate Daniel Janse van Rensburg with R39 million for his unlawful arrest and detention. Daniel Janse van Rensburg, South African businessman, was imprisoned seven years ago in Equatorial Guinea’s Black Beach prison.  He stayed there for 423 days and endured torture. The court thus recognised the poor conditions of his detention and punished the Vice President for that. This is progress for the condition of the prisoners in the country. However, it is important to keep in mind that it might not be the case for local citizens. Daniel Janse van Rensburg is a rich white man from a foreign country which means that he’s more able to get support in this kind of case.
