Following his visit to Venezuela, the International Criminal Court (ICC) prosecutor, Karim Khan, announced that he would open an investigation into crimes against humanity in Venezuela. President Nicolás Maduro, in turn, pledged to cooperate with the process, stating that although he does not agree with the decision, it must be respected. Venezuela is the first country in Latin America to be investigated by the ICC.

The investigation that will be initiated is an important step forward in the search for justice in the country, mainly for victims of arbitrary arrests and relatives of victims of extrajudicial killings and political prisoners who denounced torture in Venezuelan military prisons and intelligence services.
