A total of 134,430 adults and children in Indonesia’s prisons, detention centres and special institutions had their prison sentences cut by the Ministry of Law and Human Rights on the 76th anniversary of Indonesia’s independence, which took place on August 17th. The remissions were granted as a reward for good behaviour to those who met the requirements set by the law. Out of the total number of inmates granted remission, 2,491 were declared free immediately. Yasonna Laoly, Indonesia’s Minister of Law and Human Rights, expressed hope that the inmates granted remission will abide by the rules and lead a better life after their release.

The Minister also called on the Directorate General of Correctional Facilities to adopt additional measures to prevent the spread of COVID-19 in prisons and detention centres. In Indonesian prisons and detention centres, the potential for COVID-19 transmission is high due to the lack of access to medical facilities and the uneven allocation of personnel.
