Indonesian Authorities Preparing Regulation to Aid Mangrove Restoration Program Funding

The government of Indonesia has stated that it is preparing a regulation in order to financially aid a programme of mangrove restoration. [1] This program is part of the bigger scheme to rehabilitate 150.000 hectares of degraded mangrove in 2021, finding finance outside the state budget. [2] Containing nearly 23% of the world’s mangroves, Indonesia store approximately 3.14 billion tonnes of carbon. This figure is not nearly as great as in the past, estimating a lost of nearly 1 million hectares of mangroves over the last 220 years. [3] Within the bigger scheme of Indonesia’s aim to reach carbon neutrality in 2060, it is the goal to rehabilitate 600.000 hectares of mangrove by 2023. This effort is led by the Indonesian authorities, and financially supported by local NGOs and the world bank. However, as the scheme is set in motion, investments ranging from $150 billion to $200 billion over the coming nine years are estimated a necessity to reach the goal of the carbon neutrality scheme. Therefore, developments outside of the state budget, such as the one discussed in this article are of great importance to see the realization of the carbon neutrality scheme.
