Imran Khan seeks exemption from appearance in Toshakhana case due to security threats.

Imran Khan (former Prime Minister of Pakistan and chairman of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf) asked for exemption from appearance in the Toshakhana case. The IHC (Islamabad High Court) reserved a verdict today on Khan’s petition. In more details, Toshakhana was established in 1974 and it refers to department stores gifts and other expensive items received by public officials. It is mandatory for officials to report the gifts and other such materials received by them to the Cabinet Division. The ECP (Election Commission of Pakistan) estimates that Khan made a profit of PKR 104.78 million on the gifts he retained which he sold. Moreover, Imran Khan resisted disclosing details of the many presents he received during his time in office. The former prime minister did not declare the money that he earned from selling the gifts which he was required to submit annually to the ECP. According to Khawaja Harris (the lawyer who took over Khan’s case) Imran Khan could not appear in court because of security threats, therefore he asked the Islamabad High Court and Lahore High Court to attend via a video link. In addition, Harris argued that the petition filed by the ECP should be declared inadmissible due to lack of competence from authorities. The capital police attempted to arrest Khan in his residence but failed.

The verdict of Imran Khan’s petition for exemption is expected today.

The court has summoned Khan for indictment in the case.

The court reserved its decision on Imran Khan's request for exemption from attendance. Later, the court turned down the plea and issued Khan's arrest warrant. According to judge Rana Mujahid Rahim, Khan must be arrested by the police and presented before the court by March 29. It needs to be mentioned that the charges that Imran Khan is facing are also related to his speech in which he allegedly threatened police and a junior judge, Zeba Chaudhry. If Khan is going to be convicted it automatically means that he is going to be disqualified from politics since under the Pakistani law, not a single person who is convicted can run for office.
