The Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) issued the Resolution 86/2021 on October 21, 2021, by which it granted precautionary measures in favor of Antônio Martins Alves, after considering that he is in a serious and urgent situation of risk of irreparable harm to his rights in Brazil.

According to the request, the whereabouts or fate  of Antônio Martins Alves has been unknown since July 16, 2021. It was alleged that Martins Alves is a traditional rural worker, lives in the area of the Canaã Settlement, and actively participates in the defense of his lands and the environment, which historically would have generated conflicts with individuals or groups interested in road construction, deforestation, tourism exploitation or other efforts with relevant environmental impact. After reporting the disappearance to the authorities on July 19, 2021, they reportedly acted, but without concrete results. The request indicated that approximately 90 days had passed without the beneficiary's whereabouts having been determined; and particular concern was expressed regarding his situation of vulnerability, given his historically marginalized socioeconomic position, age and health due to his reduced mobility.
