The Inter-American Commission of Human Rights condemns the attacks against the independent of the judicial body in El Salvador.

On 3 May 2021, the Inter-American Commission of Human Rights condemned the decision of the legislative assembly of El Salvador to remove the five titular magistrates of the Constitutional Chamber of the Supreme Court of Justice and the four substitutes, as well as the Attorney General of the Republic. According to the IACHR, this step violates the constitutional norms that regulate the procedure and the Inter-American standards for the removal of justice operators, namely the right to defence and due process of law. The Commission sees this episode as a serious step towards a stronger series of attacks against the principle of separation and independence of powers and the democratic rule of law. As a response to these concerns, the IACHR opted to install a Rapid and Integrated Response Coordination Unit (SACROI) to monitor and respond to the human rights situation in this Central America’s country.
