Malaysia: Concerns over freedom of speech

SHARE

Recent cases of arrests bring the issue of lacking freedom of speech in Malaysia on the agenda again. Human Rights Watch raised concerns over the status of free speech in Malaysia after there were several new cases where people were arrested only because of speaking out against the government or the royal family.

In the case of a graphic artist, the police arrested him because of the creating a Spotify playlist which was satirical about a tweet by the queen of Malaysia. In another case, seven activist were arrested because of peacefully protesting against an extension of strict movement control in a village since the villagers were unable to survive without work and the support of the government in the lockdown.

Human Right Watch claims that these are only two out of many examples. Especially after the new Malaysian government got into power in March 2020, the cases of criminal investigations for peaceful speech and protests are increasing.

Reporters Without Borders also dropped Malaysia in the ranking by 18 places compared to the year before in the World Press Freedom Index. The Malaysian government enacted a vague emergency ordinance against the spread of fake news about Covid-19 and placed a state of emergency, leading to the decline in the index.
