Malaysia: Worries of police violence after another man died after being held custody

SHARE

A Ganapathy, a 40-years-old man, was held in police custody from February 24 to March 8 after which he was transferred to hospital. He died only recently from his injuries, his mother claims to be from police abuse. She accuses the police that her son was beaten while he was in detention. 18 youth organisations published a joint statement now, expressing their solidarity with Ganapathy’s family and raising awareness of police violence in custody. They urged the government as well as the police not be silent anymore about such issues, claiming that this is resulting in the infringement of their civil rights. There have been similar cases as the one of Ganapathy and thus, the groups called for the building of an Independent Police Complaints and Misconduct Commission to make allegations against the police.
