The closure of refugee camps in Kenya have postponed to June 2022

There was a lot of disapproval regarding the decision by Kenya in March 2021 to close the refugee camps in Dadaab and Kakuma. Kenya has now decided to stagger the return of refugees and to move the closure till June 2022. Amnesty International welcomed this decision, stating that this will "allow authorities to work out a legal formula favourable to those living in the camps".

This is the 5th time Kenya has tried closing the camps. The Dadaab camp hosts around 224,462 refugees, whilst Kakuma hosts around 206,458. Most of the asylum-seekers are from Somalia or South Sudan, but they are also from the Democratic Republic of Congo, Ethiopia, Burundi, Rwanda, Uganda, Eritrea and Sudan.

The Kenyan government suspects an ongoing criminal activity in the refugee camps. Particularly, radicalisation by the Al Shabaab terrorist organisation and proliferation of illegal arms, leading to an unstable climate in these camps. The Refugee Secretariat in Kenya stated that “[t]he camp by nature is a centre for humanitarian assistance but due to illegal activities such as smuggling of illegal weapons and contraband goods the humanitarian character of the camp has been lost hence endangering the lives of the genuine refugees and Kenyans working in and around the camp”.
