Two Christians face death penalty over blasphemy charges in Pakistan

SHARE

Authorities have arrested two Christian men in the city of Lahore, accused of using insulting remarks against Islam’s holy book and its Prophet Muhammad.

Muslim student Haroon Ahmad filed a first information report on February 13 against Haroon Masih and Salamat Masih accusing them of insulting Islam. He stated that the two men started preaching the Christian religion in front of other people, while allegedly defending the sacredness of the Bible. Haroon and Salamat, on the other hand, refute the allegations, claiming that they were secretly reading their own book rather than preaching to others.

Under Pakistan's blasphemy laws, anyone accused of insulting Islam or other religious figures can be sentenced to death if found guilty. While authorities have yet to carry out a death sentence for blasphemy, just the accusation of blasphemy can cause riots in Pakistan.
