The Council of Europe has published an article emphasising the importance of journalism in society and how this field needs extra protection, which assures the freedom of the press. Recently, many images circulated on social media portraying injured journalists, in most cases following protests and documenting them. The phenomenon was seen in the Russian Federation, Bulgaria and Albania. The violence against journalists is mainly carried out by the people who are supposed to protect them, the state officials. The article includes the decision of the European Court of Human Rights, which defines violent acts against journalists, especially at the hands of the state, as a breach of Article 3 and Article 10 of the European Convention of Human Rights. The articles refer to torture, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment, and the right to freedom of expression. The Council of Europe cautions against the COVID-19 consequences felt in this area: the violent acts against journalists happen more often, thus being on the rise.
