Nigeria - 29 students remain in captivity after 37 days

The bandits responsible for the abduction of 39 students from the Federal College of Forestry Mechanisation in Afaka, Kaduna, still maintain 29 students in their custody. On April 16, 2021, the bandits threatened to kill these 29 students following the refusal of the Kaduna State Government to meet their demand for N300 million ransom.

The students were abducted on March 11, 2021, and 10 of them were released earlier this month, following a payment of ransom by some parents.

The tension between parents and the Kaduna State Government is growing as the lives of the students are at risk. At a press conference in Kaduna, on April 16, 2021, the spokesperson of the parents, Friday Sanni, confirmed receiving threats from the bandits claiming they would kill the remaining 29 students. Friday Sanni further stated that the government had threatened to prosecute any parent who would negotiate with the abductors, claims that were denied by the Kaduna State Government. Moreover, Friday Sanni called on Nigerians, non-governmental organisations, charity organisations and donors to donate support to rescue the students.
